(AllHipHop News) Former Black Sheep member Dres will give fans a bit of nostalgia with a Native Tongues reunion on his forthcoming album, From the Black Pool of Genius.

Rapper/actor Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, along with Dave of De La Soul and Mike G of the Jungle Brothers, will appear with Dres on a bonus track on the offering, which will also feature cameos from fellow Rhymesayers AZ, Rhymefest, and Jean Grae.

From the Black Pool of Genius is the follow-up to Dres’ first solo album, 1999’s Sure Shot Redemption.

In preparation for the new project, the rapper released a five song EP, From The Black Pool Of Genius: The Prelude, in December.

Prior to his solo endeavors, Dres enjoyed a successful run with William "Mista Lawnge" McLean in the 1990’s as Black Sheep.

The duo, which returned for a brief reunion in 2000 with the album Redlight Greenlight(EP), is best known for classic songs such as "The Choice is Yours," "Flavor of the Month" and "Strobelight Honey."

In 2007, Dres released 8WM/Novakane, a download only Black Sheep album featuring contributions from singer Yummy Bingham. With From the Black Pool of Genius, Dres sees the collaborations with other artists as an elevation from the EP as well as an asset that only enhances the impact of the full-length album on fans.

“I would say the major difference [between The Prelude and LP] is the entourage of songs on the LP come with many guests which brings a nice variety to the spices already being served," the rapper explained, while weighing in on the meaning behind the title of his latest project. "Black Pool doesn’t refer to black people. It refers to the color black's unique ability to absorb light. This deep, vast pool of soul, of artistic insight; although it's not always understood, the light it reflects back to the 'pih-poh' is necessary."

Featuring production from Paten Locke, Tough Junkie, BeanOne, ShowBiz, the Beatnuts, and Urban Soul Group, the From The Black Pool Of Genius album will include the song, "Forever LuvLee," a hold over track from the EP.

In addition to providing a variety of guests and sounds, the release serves as a vehicle for expressing what hip-hop means to Dres, who relayed a universal interpretation on the culture.

"I once heard a poet say that 'hip hop backward is 'pih poh (people)'- the way I see it, many artists are a lot more hip-hop than they ever realized," the rapper stated.

Dres’ From The Black Pool Of Genius album is slated to hit stores on available April 6.

(AllHipHop News) Legendary turntablist DJ Too Tuff is now a free man, thanks to a dismissal of assault charges against him.

The court ruling, which was administered Tuesday (Feburary 9) night at Philadelphia’s Criminal Justice Center, concludes a long standing case that stemmed from a November 2008 fight at the Silk City (5th & Spring Garden) diner bar and lounge.

At the time of the incident, Too Tuff was selling copies of his CD, Too Tuff's Lost Archives. Prior to the dismissal of the assault charges, the entertainer (born Joseph Hicks) was serving time at Philadelphia’s House of Correction.

Too Tuff is best known as a member of the famed Philadelphia based group, the Tuff Crew. Comprised of Too Tuff, LA Kid, Ice Dog, Tone Love and Monty G, the collective released a total of four albums, including 1987’s Phanjam and a live album titled Still Dangerous.

Over the years, the Tuff Crew has shared the stage with the likes of LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, Run-DMC, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane and 2Live Crew.

Too Tuff, considered the forefather of the turntablist movement, has been cited as an influence among various DJs that include the late DJ AM, DJZ-Trip, DJ Shadow and other New School DJs credit DJ Too Tuff for inspiring their style and music.

Tuesday’s ruling came as good news for Too Tuff, who acknowledged answered prayers and thanked his “legal dream team of Katherine Muns Esq. & Adrienne Kosinski Esq,” in addition to those who supported him and “believed in god, the justice system & the values of love, loyalty and altruism!”

The entertainer, who is battling thyroid cancer, also expressed his excitement at being able to return to working on music.

Too Tuff is reportedly moving forward while lining up DJ and producing endeavors.

Editor's Note: Rapper/activist Immortal Technique (nee Felipe Coronel) has composed a lengthy editorial dissertation on the present chaos in Haiti, which has graced headlines since the 7.0 earthquake on January 22, 2010. “From the First of the Blacks to the First of the Whites - Reflections on the Haitian Revolution and Present Condition" is a delicate mixture of opinion and history. Furthermore, Immortal Technique addresses why Haiti has been perceived as cursed or that there was some "deal with the Devil" in the past. This is a two-part write up that is informative and captivation for those interested in unearthing the truth.
“From the First of the Blacks to the First of the Whites - Reflections on the Haitian Revolution and Present Condition"

Since the recent tragedy that has befallen the proud and persevering nation of Haiti, there has been an outpouring of support followed by a few disturbing falsities being spread about the history of the island and its people. I wrote the following to shed some light on events during and around the Haitian Revolution. Please remember memorizing and reiterating should never pass for learning. Deciphering the significance of individuals and events is what truly teaches us not just about history, but also about ourselves.

There is a wide spectrum of beliefs behind what has caused Haiti to suffer ceaselessly over the years. Some see the problem as being mostly political, bad governance, modern day colonialism, or the perceived necessity to make an example to the world of what a successful slave revolution will get you. There are even those on the fringe who cling to an ancient superstition that the island was freed by a mythological pact with Satan. In order to shed light on the issue I am forced to go back in time. Obviously not to the beginning of occupational history, but far enough to give a realistic perspective on Haiti and it’s struggle.
We join a story centuries in the making. It is the year 1794 and the scent of musket powder blows over all of Europe. The French Revolution may have changed the face of the world, but its unintended consequences that influenced its colonies would come to overshadow France’s own glory. It was during this year, on the 4th of February, that France’s First Republic Convention (under pressure from massive slave revolts) decided it had to transcend the stumbling efforts of the ‘enlightened monarchs’ of Europe and abolish slavery. Yet in the customary fashion of our own Declaration of Independence's "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal," the gesture, much like these words, became a glaring example of self-righteous insincerity. Equality, the fraternal twin brother of Independence, was aborted at the fetal stage of development and the Revolution came to betray itself.

Known then as “Saint Domingue” (French for Santo Domingo), the colony that we now call Haiti, yielded great fortune to those who possessed her. It was rich with sugar, cotton, tobacco, cocoa and other valued resources. So much so that the European Superpowers of that day fought bitterly against each other to control the island and her inhabitants. After all, the African slaves living on Saint Domingue were the proverbial engines that ran the machine. From among them appeared a man who was born a slave but who would become free and lead all his countrymen toward that same destiny. He was a glitch in the matrix, an act of nature, and a mistake to be corrected in the eyes of the island’s autocratic semi-feudal society. His name was Francois-Dominique Toussaint soon to be heralded, “L'Overture.”

As a former servant and carriage driver, he had abstained from participating directly in previous uprisings stemming from the refusal of slave masters to honor “The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.” He had waited patiently and then allied himself with other rebel leaders who had risen to the task of overthrowing colonial rule. His ideas were innovative and his guerrilla tactics highly disciplined. No wonder then that he rose through the ranks of the rebellious forces so quickly.

Before fighting alongside the French against other colonial powers, Toussaint had been in league with the Spanish, who along with Great Britain were at war with France. The Spanish were used as a support system for his designs when white colonials refused to endorse the full rights of citizenship to free blacks given by the French edict of 1792. In other words, for Toussaint they were there to serve his vision rather than him serving theirs. Having so many different nations vying for a piece of the pie proved a difficult task to navigate. To his credit, Toussaint had managed to out-maneuver them all, cleverly using their own tactics of pitting one against another. But when Spain and England did not follow through with their promises to free slaves, he discarded his allegiance to them.

After grueling and hard-fought campaigns against the Spanish and British, he took control of the French Colony. Toussaint promoted reconciliation among the races, which wasn’t any easier then than it would be now. He also engaged and renegotiated better terms of trade with Britain and the new American Republic alike. Catholicism was adopted as the national religion and slavery was abolished. The news traveled around the world like lightning- the African Slaves were undergoing the course of reversing 300 years of domination.

As news of the Independence of Haiti was circulating, the reaction was mixed. Toussaint’s actions openly received the approval of Alexander Hamilton, who saw Europe’s weakening in the West as an opening for America’s bid for commercial supremacy. He even aided in the drafting of the precursor to the island’s first constitution in 1801. However, when Thomas Jefferson came to power, American support was reined in. Jefferson openly owned slaves and had even fathered children with the now famous girl, Sally Hemmings. But much more than his personal stake in legitimized servitude, it was the perceived international threat that most likely shaped his opinion. The surrounding colonies and his new Republic being destabilized by the idea of a successful slave revolt obviously frightened him. His assertion being that their freedom would suddenly cripple the economy built around them. He is quoted as saying that it was necessary at all costs to “confine the plague to the island.” I guess “My emancipation / don’t fit your equation.”

By 1801, Toussaint was in full control of Saint Domingue. In a moment of perhaps self-preserving foresight and/or genuine altruism, he advanced onto the Spanish side of the island. His army defeated the remaining white colonial powers and freed all the slaves, showing the people of color the first glimpses of freedom they’d known practically since the time of Columbus. He rejected the ancient custom that dated back to the Middle Ages, of sending his children as hostages to his 'Suzerain' as a symbol of fidelity. He further declared his intentions in a famous letter addressing Napoleon himself. It was titled: "From the First of Blacks to the First of the Whites." In it he pledged his loyalty to France. He stated firmly that slavery would be utterly annihilated; that he (Toussaint) would remain governor indefinitely (a suggestion from Hamilton and then Sec. of State Pickering). Furthermore Saint Domingue would be a free and independent state. The correspondence must have come as a shock to then Consul Napoleon. It was probably the sheer audacity of a former slave proposing terms of independence, albeit in the most polite and articulate manner, that struck him. This man was obviously more dangerous than he could have ever imagined. Toussaint and his people represented something that had to be proved false no matter the cost.

See the very existence of their independence showed the entire human race a side of history that we are only now truly rediscovering. European society had relied mainly on creating divisions and the spread of epidemics, not simply superior military prowess, to overcome the indigenous populations of Africa and the Americas. The Haitian Revolution exposed the façade of European invincibility, and it tore away at their justification for invasion on the grounds of Christianization. The mythology of racial superiority began to take the shape of an ancient death mask from classical antiquity.

Napoleon (seen left) would hear no more and dispatched his brother-in-law Gen. Charles LeClerc, to the island with a huge force of infantry troops and warships. His stated intention was to secure the new state. At first confrontation ensued, but they arrived at a truce once Toussaint had been promised that the French would not attempt to reinstate slavery. However, the moment he let his guard down he was almost immediately betrayed. Toussaint and his entire family were arrested. Restoring the island to France's control, LeClerc had Toussaint sent to prison in France. But this was just the beginning. He quietly moved to begin the process of re-enslavement. "Since terror is the sole resource left me, I employ it…destroy all the mountain negroes, men and women, sparing only children under twelve years of age,” read his report to Napoleon.

The French now shifted their focus to using the former so-called "Mulatto" people who Toussaint had defeated in previous military campaigns to maintain control of the island. They, the “Mulattos,” had been at odds with elements of the Revolution earlier, although they had suffered almost equally from the torments of slavery. The very concept of the “Mulatto”, that still to this day plagues the African, Latin American, Caribbean, and so Called West Indian world, merits an explanation all to itself.

The Latin ‘mulus,’ became the Old Spanish or Old Castillian ‘mula,’ finally evolving into the Spanish and Portuguese “Mulatto,” that symbolized the reverse anthropomorphic semblance of a human being. A mule is the physical combination of a horse and a donkey. This part is simple enough. But the symbolic nature of this has a racial connotation that tears apart our society even today. The horse symbolizes the White European, elegant, regal and highly valued. And the donkey embodies what they thought the purpose of an African/Indigenous slave should be; a beast of burden to be worked until the day that ‘it’ dies.

The combination of a horse and a donkey creates a species that rarely if ever is capable of reproducing. The male is always born sterile, and the female is exceptionally similar in this way. Hence the idea that nothing good can come from them. This concept then became permeated in the portrayal of the “tragic mulatto” in 19^th century American literature, leading into classic Hollywood cinema. It is a theme symbolized by the downfall of a “Mulatto” or “Quadroon”/”Octoroon” attempting to pass for white. It also focused on the conflict of those trapped between two races. Those who despised and pitied their darker half and their own skin color, while needing the approval of whites to validate themselves. In most of the stories peace is only found for the said main character in death. The very definition of its existence solidified the role of White and Black in the American caste system, whose remnants we all still presently reside in. It also laid out the role of Blacks to themselves, without many of them even to this day understanding the loaded straw man argument about race posed within the terminology.
It was the Haitian Revolution that challenged the very idea of slavery and the existence of a lesser man. It put the “enlightenment” of Europeans on trial, and forced America to confront what she was becoming as opposed to what she was supposed to be. The usage of concepts like the “Mulatto” were necessary for late 18^th century white society to put institutionalized racism on life support for another 150 years, and create a violent split in the psychology of Mother Earth’s first children.

Influential producer James Dewitt Yancey, AKA J Dilla, was born today (February 7, 1974).

The Detroit producer, who began collecting records at the age of two, made a name for himself in Detroit’s Hip-Hop scene with groups with Phat Kat (1st Down) and the late Proof (5 Elementz).

J. Dilla eventually settled with classmates T3 and Baatin in Slum Village. His work with Dilla' attracted the attention of A Tribe Called Quest, who recruited the talented producer to be a member of their Ummah (Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Dilla) production team.

He helped craft several songs on Tribe's platinum fourth album Beats, Rhymes, and Life including "Get a Hold," "1nce Again," "Keep It Movin'," "Word Play," and "Stressed Out." J.

Dilla also produced classic singles for other artists, such as De La Soul ("Stakes Is High"), The Pharcyde ("Drop," "Runnin'"), Q-Tip ("Vivrant Thing," "Breathe and Stop"), Janet Jackson ("Got 'Til It's Gone"), Common ("The Light"), and Erykah Badu ("Didn't Cha Know," "Cleva").

In 2004, Dilla was officially diagnosed with lupus and TTP, a rare and incurable blood disorder. The disease greatly restricted Dilla's ability to tour and also resulted in a marked weight loss.

Dilla immersed himself in his work, and successfully completed his celebrated final project in 2006, the sonic masterpiece Donuts. The album was released on his birthday, February 7, just three days before Dilla's death at the age of 32 from cardiac arrest.

Twitter was flooded with messages about J. Dilla today. . “Happy bday to the greatest hiphop producer ever…your spirit is 4eva my dude,” Q-Tip stated. “We wont let ANY HATE take us away from spreading the legacy of J. Dilla.”

J. Dilla leaves behind two daughters, and younger brother Illa J.

“Happy Birthday Dilla Dawg,” Illa J Tweeted. “We miss you bro. And the Legacy continues to live on.” The celebration of J. Dilla’s life is also an international affair.

Tonight, promoters The Doctor's Orders will host DJ’s Spin Doctor, Rusty Ryan and Harry Love in the UK at Scala, for the “J-Dilla Changed My Life” party.

All proceeds from the event will benefit The J. Dilla Foundation.

Dear Inter-web, fans, friends and JUX family,

People keep asking me what's up with JUX. There's been some talk, there have been some rumors. Some half true, some way off. Reports of our demise have been mildly exaggerated. Here's what it really all boils down to: (read on)

This year, a decade after starting DEF JUX and after overseeing the releases of some incredible albums including the forthcoming release of my dear late and great friend Camu Tao's brilliant "KING OF HEARTS" LP, I'm stepping away from my duties as artistic director for the label to concentrate on what I love most: being a producer and an artist full time. This is something I've been contemplating for a few years now, and can't think of a better time or, with the eventual release of Camu's record, a more poetic way to transition into a new direction.

This means change for JUX. Of course we'll still have our website, we will still sell our catalog, merch and more as well as bring you news and updates on all our projects and artists. We will be releasing "KING OF HEARTS", a DEF JUX remix compilation, a 10 year anniversary retrospective and some other goodies. But then as a traditional record label DEF JUX will effectively be put on hiatus. We are not closing, but we are changing. The process is already underway, and the last several months (for those wondering what the hell we've been up to) have been spent dealing with the technical aspects of wrapping up the label in it's current form and re-imagining our collective and individual futures.

In 2000 starting a traditional record label made a lot of sense. But now, in 2010, less so and I find myself yearning for something else to put my energy into. I also see newer, smarter, more interesting things on the horizon for the way art and commerce intersect, and as an artist and an entrepreneur, I'm eager to see them unfold. The evolution of this industry is, in my opinion, exciting, inevitable and it would be nice to see the DEFINITIVE JUX brand be a part of it. In other words, maybe we can turn this hoopty in to a hovercraft.

All business aside, and regardless of what form JUX may inevitably take, my focus for the immediate future is going to be back-to-basics. The fun stuff: sitting in the studio and immersing myself in music, performing it for for my fans when the time comes and whatever (or wherever) else might be out there creatively for me. Thats how it all started and that's how the next phase will begin. The days of me dedicating the majority of my time and energy into providing JUX with a constant stream of physical releases from multiple artists are on hold for the time being. My heart (and what little common sense I possess) is telling me to simplify my focus and it has always been my policy to listen to my heart.

Truly, DEF JUX has been amazing to be a part of. So many good people. So much fun. I feel very lucky to be friends and collaborators with people who have affected and continue to affect my life and work deeply and indelibly. Working with the likes of Amaechi Uzoigwe, Jesse Ferguson, Jason Drake, and Katy Eustis at JUX as well as allies like Kathryn Frazier (biz3), Michael Bull and Lisa Socransky-Austin (to name only a few) has been incredible. These are people who worked for generally meager wages because they loved what they did and they believed in the artists and the idea of DEF JUX. Anyone would be lucky to have worked with even one person as dedicated and passionate as all of them are. They are true champions of indie music and they (and too many others to mention here) have my gratitude and loyalty forever.

None of it would have existed, though, if not for the artists. Artists who rolled the dice on us the same way we did on them, and were there with us as we battled it all out. CAMU, MR LIF, AESOP ROCK, MURS, CAGE, ROB SONIC, HANGAR 18, CHIN CHIN, CANNIBAL OX, THE PERCEPTIONISTS, RJD2, DESPOT, SA SMASH, YAK BALLZ, CRAYZ, THE MIGHTY UNDERDOGS, DIZZEE RASCAL, DEL, P.F.A.C, ACTIVATOR, COOL CALM PETE ... the list goes on. I consider them all geniuses at what they do. Every victory that they have had and will have will always feel like a victory for myself and all of us at JUX. It's been a joy to create and even struggle with them all. It has not always been easy, but it's almost always been fulfilling. I only hope the work we put in together helped build a path to their collective futures. They have my sincerest well wishes and genuine respect.

Lastly and most importantly are the fans... holy s**tTHE FANS! Our fans are no joke. I can't tell you how humbled I am to have felt the love and respect that they have shown us all. Even when we did things they didn't like, they stuck around. This was their label as much as ours. We answered to them, and yet they respected that we did what we loved, nothing more and nothing less. We always will. You are why we do any of this, and I'll never be able to express how much your support means to all of us. I think I speak for all of us Jukies when I say I love making music for you and can't wait to make more.

Grand Master Roc Raida - Tribute Event @ BB Kings - October 22nd - NEW YORK CITY

Thursday 22nd October @ BB Kings saw New York and the rest of the world for that matter, came together for what was the greatest event I have ever witnessed. The Grand Master Roc Raida Tribute. I have never seen so much unity, love and respect in one room! All to tribute a World Champion DJ, great father, family man and friend. RIP Grand Master Roc Raida.

I was so happy to be in New York for this memorable event along with Tony Prince (Founder of DMC).

Many of the greatest turntablists on planet Earth gathered at BB Kings to re-create Roc Raida’s routines throughout his battling/DJ career and to pay tribute to this legend. It took me a few days after the event to even come up with what I wanted to say about the event, because if I am honest it left me completely speechless.

Where do I start?

BB Kings was full to the brim of 900+ people all there for one reason.

Tony Prince got up on stage to a full house to introduce the incredible DJs who were about to perform. It was great hearing Tony shouting Roc Raidaaaaaaaaaaaaaa like he did in1995, the year he won the DMC World Championship, and I know how many of the DJs loved having Tony on stage!

The night kicked off with tributes by the X-Ecutioners – Rob Swift, Boogie Blind, Total Eclipse, Mista Sinista and Precision. Boogie Blind in particular blew me away; these guys are truly the best! Raida would have been so proud of them all.

The stage was full and crowded! As I looked around on stage and saw the super star line up, I realised this was a one off event and was unlikely to ever happen again!

Paying their tributes to the Grand Master was former DMC World Champions A-Trak who performed Raida’s ‘Push It Routine’ and DJ Craze who performed ‘Ugly People Be Quiet’ and ‘Sucka MCs’. I don’t know what it is about Craze, but I could watch him for hours, he oooozed personality and flare as he always does and smiled throughout his set, his re-creations were out of this world, he makes it look way too easy!

Newly crowned DMC World Champion DJ Shiftee stepped up with one of my favourite Raida routines – ‘Chief Rocka’.

The Beat Junkies DJ Babu performed ‘Going Back To Cali’ and Shortkut performed ‘I Got To Have It’.

DJ I-Dee re-created ‘Bring It Here’, DJ Dummy performed ‘Bridge Is Over’.
I loved how all the DJs incorporated Raida’s body tricks, it was so special, and every single DJ who performed was amazing.

There were two screens on either side of stage that aired tribute videos to Raida. Personal videos, on tour documentaries, DMC footage, messages from the likes of DJ Premier, Jazzy Jeff and Mix Master Mike. It was so touching, and I could feel everyone in BB Kings felt the same way I did.

The night was an emotional roller coaster, brimming with happiness and joy and sad and tearful the next, all within the space of 3 hours.

Other performances on the night came from the Almighty Beat Junkies (Babu, J.Rocc, Rhettmatic and Shortkut) who performed a tribute set, amazing amazing performance. It was so good to see all the Beat Junkies in the building! I love these guys.

The inventor of the Beat Juggle and X-Men founder ‘Steve Dee’ stepped up to stage to perform as well as Roli Rho of the 5th Platoon.

The night’s hosts were Kinetic NRG and Lord Sear. Fantastic party rocking sets were provided by Z-Trip, J.Rocc and Spin One (who runs a show alongside DJ Fatfingaz and DJ Yonny) on alistradio.net and their show that I have been a guest on now numerous times is Table Manners, so big shouts to the Table Manners crew!

One of the highlights for me alongside Craze and Boogie Blind was the phenomenal ‘Rock The Bells’ circle. This was truly outstanding! DMC Legend and one of my fav men in the world: DJ Cash Money got up, everyone chanting his name! Rock The Bells included – Rob Swift, Mista Sinista, Total Eclipse, A Trak, DJ Scratch, Boogie Blind, Cash Money, Total Eclipse, Sean C, Precision, Craze and more!

I could have stayed at BB Kings till daylight, and I think the DJs and everyone in the building would have too!

Busta Rhymes came onto stage and brought Tyesha (Raida’s wife) and two of their beautiful children up one by one. He talked about Raida, touring with him, how they have become close and close to his beautiful family. It was just something else.

Many other attendees included: Kool Herc, Lord Finesse, Large Professor, Johnny Juice, Scram Jones, Scribble, IXL, Eclipse, Infamous, Klever, J-Smoke, DJ Slyce, IXL, Immortal Technique and so many many more plus Roc Raida’s mother and family on his side and in laws.

It was great to also see my friends Christie Z, Sondra, Marilyn, Cutfucious, Marcus, Fatfingaz (ouuuuuuuuuuuw), Rugged One, Esquire, Yom, Kyle aka DJ air conditioning unit, Complex, Russell, Matty Mcfly, Ty Handswell and anyone who I have missed I am sorry, there were too many people there!

Huge respect and props to Sugarcuts, Sean C, Pro and everyone that put together and worked on the event.

Much love and respect to Tyesha and their beautiful family.

Def Jam changed music business, still a power at 25, By Lisa Respers France, CNN

(CNN) -- A recipe that includes a nondescript New York University dorm room, a heavyset Jewish kid from Long Island and a street-wise black guy from Queens seems like an unlikely one to cook up musical history.

But when Def Jam Records came on the scene a quarter of a century ago, it did just that and more.

What began as a boutique indie label quickly caught the ear of a generation and elevated a style of music that had existed primarily in the clubs and block parties of the city boroughs into a thriving new genre.

"Def Jam meant to the music industry as much as Stax, Atlantic and Motown meant to their respective music," said rapper Chuck D, whose group Public Enemy is one of the most famous to appear on the label. "It started from the same humble beginnings that all of those other companies started, very small, but very much passionate about the music."

When Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons joined forces to co-found the label, their business savvy -- combined with their love of rap -- resulted in a company that, despite changes in the music business and the label itself, retains a notable name.

Max Gousse, now an executive with the Island Def Jam Music Group, was a young man in the New York borough of Queens when he first fell in love with the tunes of Def Jam artists such as LL Cool J, Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys.

"Def Jam was the label that you kind of grew up with, so it was definitely a goal of mine to work here," Gousse said.

What is now one of the largest labels in the world was initially a two-man operation featuring the forefathers, Rubin and Simmons.

According to the 2005 book "Def Jam, Inc.: Russell Simmons, Rick Rubin and the Extraordinary Story of the World's Most Influential Hip-Hop Label" by Stacy Gueraseva, Rubin was a film and video major at New York University in 1982 when he fell in love with rap music.

After parlaying the connections he made at clubs into party promotion, Rubin found success producing T La Rock and DJ Jazzy Jay's single "It's Yours."

His path soon crossed that of Simmons, himself a successful party promoter with an ear for a hit. Rubin was impressed.

"Hip-hop was a tiny little cottage industry, and Russell [Simmons] was the center of the hip-hop world," Rubin said during the 2009 VH1 Hip Hop Honors program that celebrated the label's anniversary. "And there was no one else even in that business really except Russell. He was it."

Their first release was LL Cool J's "I Need a Beat" after the teen mailed his demo to Rubin's dorm room.

The company soon graduated to a 600-square-foot former dance studio on Manhattan's East 19th Street (Simmons and future label executive Lyor Cohen shared an apartment next door).

Despite the new address, the company was anything but conventional. "Def Jam, Inc." author Gueraseva describes the many meetings Rubin held in his SoHo apartment "amid its clutter of paperwork, porn magazines, and records" as well as the occasional scurrying rat.

Before long, mainstream America would become aware of Def Jam, partially thanks to the crossover success of the rap group Run-D.M.C. (which included Simmons' younger brother Joseph), whose collaboration with the rock group Aerosmith, "Walk This Way," received heavy rotation on MTV.

Now, the list of artists that can claim Def Jam in their lineage is vast.

"Def Jam is the Motown Records of hip-hop, and that is without question," said writer and pop culture expert Kevin Powell. "You really can't talk about a significant chapter in hip-hop history over the last 25 years without talking about Def Jam."

The company didn't just stop with one genre.

Def Jam was purchased by the Universal Music Group in 2000 and was merged with Island Records to form Island Def Jam Music Group.

R&B singers, including Ne-Yo and Chrisette Michele, have joined pop artists such as Duffy and rockers such as Fall Out Boy to extend the label's reach even further.

"I think the label attempts to reflect the experiences the youth culture is going through," executive Gousse said. "I think that as long as we mirror what's happening that the label will continue to be relevant."

And for hip-hop artists, Def Jam remains iconic.

"I think Def Jam has done a whole lot for hip-hop, for music in general. It's just given us a face of hip-hop for us to want to become a part of something," rapper Snoop Dogg said. "Even the rappers from the west[ern U.S.] wanted to be a part of Def Jam. Def Jam was like the Mecca of hip-hop."

Not that it has all been smooth sailing.

Chuck D said he remembers feeling like "it was us against the world" because initially, so many looked down on hip-hop.

"We figured that in order for the genre to survive, we weren't just fighting for ourselves," he said. "We were fighting for the respect for the whole art form."

That family atmosphere is gone now, Chuck D said.

The rapper lamented that he doesn't think the current executives grasp or respect the very strong place hip-hop holds in the hearts of the music-loving public.

"I don't think the people that run Def Jam today have a clue," Chuck D said, adding that he floated his name as a replacement after rapper and former Def Jam President Jay-Z left in 2007. "I think that the brand and the name stand up because it's been around for a long time, but I don't think the folks at Universal have a clue."

Rubin and Simmons have moved on to continue their success, the former as a celebrated producer (and sometime record exec) and the latter as an entrepreneur whose business interests have included a thriving clothing empire, Phat Farm.

Yet Def Jam remains.

Speaking during the 2009 VH1 Hip Hop Honors, Island Def Jam Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Antonio "L.A." Reid said he believes that it will continue to live on for years to come.

"When Def Jam was founded, it was founded upon an amazing idea," he said. "And it's an amazing idea that's bigger than all of its founders, bigger than all of its presidents, bigger than all of its chairmen and bigger than all of its artists. My guess is that it will be around a lot longer than any of us."
